EARLY
MODEL COOLING SYSTEMS
Our
favorite feature of the early models is their wonderful full-flow cooling
systems! Late model "by-pass" type systems reduce
the flow of water through the engine to maintain temperature. In early
models, all water from the pump travels through the block and head, which
provides a more even temperature distribution. The increased velocity
also tends to keep cooling passages a bit cleaner. Temperature is maintained
externally by a Dole thermostat (seen just above the engine in the rear)
which re-circulates some of the warm water back to the intake of the pump.
Of course, to us FRESH WATER COOLING IS A MUST!
FUEL
SYSTEM : SOMETHING OLD AND SOMETHING NEW !
In
this profile, we show the early model carburetor (we like the cast iron
construction) with an electric (Carter type) fuel pump .
The crankcase ventilation kit
is from Indigo Electronics.
The
one micron in-line polishing filter
gets our vote for the single most important safety feature that you can
add to your engine. This filter, along with a good quality primary
fuel filter (one with a water separator), can practically eliminate carburetor
flooding, which is usually caused by dirt in the float valve.
OUR
CHOICE OF BEST EARLY
AND LATE MODEL FEATURES
The
first time around, in the late 1940’s, Mr. Hinckley chose a Universal
Utility 4 for this gentleman’s sailboat. We would like to
think that he would have found this engine to be a suitable substitute.
