Hi Don Moyer, On replacing the distributor cap on my A4, I noticed that the alternator belt touches it! Any advice?

Don Moyer comments   Naillo,

Whenever one of the four protrusions from the edge of the distributor cap contacts the alternator belt, it's because the distributor has not been installed in the recommended manner; e. g. with the rotor pointing directly away from the block when number one piston is at TDC. The engine itself doesn't really care where we orient number one TDC, but in any other orientation than with the rotor pointing directly away from the block, one of the four "bumps" on the cap will likely contact the belt.

I am interested in breathing life into an 1973 atomic 4 engine in a friends sailboat. What info do I need to provide for the right manuals? Any info. from any one will help.

Don Moyer comments   Chuck,

Our Moyer Marine Service and Overhaul Manual is a complete guide to understanding each major system of the Atomic 4, preventative maintenance, winterizing, and step by step instructions for overhaul if it should ever become necessary. The date of your engine clearly identifies it as a late model; however the manual covers both early and late model engines.

The Manual has a product number of MANL_01_98 in our online catalog at moyermarine.com. Just search for "98" (without the quotes).

First of all your sight is fantastic, lots of info! Anyway, I have a 1980 Catalina 30 TRBS that is on a mooring can in Chicago. No opportunity for plugging in, so I use a couple of solar chargers to keep the batteries topped off. Based on all of the info I have read I have a very common problem, engine is hard to start/doesn’t start. I’ve had the boat for 5 years now and “knock on wood” it’s really the only significant problem I’ve had. Last year I bought new Optima deep cycle batteries and didn’t experience any starting problems. I stored the batteries inside over the winter on my workbench and just put them in the boat over the weekend prior to our springtime launch. Went to take the boat up to our harbor and the engine didn’t start; didn’t even turn over. So the guys at the boatyard jumped the engine (directly at the starter, because hooking up to the batteries didn’t work) and it started right up. I ran the engine for about 30 minutes, turned it off, and tried to restart, but the engine didn’t turn over once again, just got a couple of clicks, then nothing. So they jumped it again and I took off, kept the motor running the whole time of course, without a problem. So now I am contemplating a new wiring harness to avoid “the loop” and get more cranking power to the starter, however, in my research I also ran across a number of people that added a third battery, dedicated solely to starting. My question is which option you think is better and most affordable for my circumstances? My boatyard is working up an estimate for a new wiring harness, but the thought of a dedicated starting battery sounds like it would give me more power and would circumvent “the loop”.

Stalling in Reverse - Followup

Found a simple fix to my reversing problem .

During the winter I moved the engine controls back to their original position. I didn't look hard enough at the routing of the choke cable - it went aft of the shift lever. The result was that when I pulled it back for reverse, the engine was choked!
I was all set to follow the reversing band adjustment procedures when I realized this. It's running fine in both directions.
