View Full Version : Facet Fuel Pump
My Facet fuel pump will not keep the polishing filter full. While running the engine at idle on the hard, I can see only a few drops per second coming into the clear filter. The filter is never full.
Does this indicate I need to replace the fuel pump or is there something else going on? I have taken the carb off and clean it again, just to be sure nothing blocking it there. I have also replace all the hoses with new ones. I am getting the gas from a 5 gallon fuel can.
Thanks,
Zack

You have a CLEAR filter?
Is the filter located between the tank and the pump?
Bill
Yes I have a clear filter and it is between the pump and carb. Also, if I take the fuel hose off the carb and use a container to catch fuel, the pump will pump a steady stream of fuel into the container.

Follow up - Took the carb off again and in checking things out, I notice when the butterfly was closed I could see light. I did not think this was the way it should be. I have another old carb that I took apart and you could not see light when the butterfly was closed. I change out the butterfly and all of a sudden the filter was getting full while the engine was idling.
I have great pressure when I put my hand over the intake. I am having a hard time getting the engine to idle down below 1300-1400 rpms. I have the idle needle turned all the way in. If I back it out the engine will start to pop through the breather. I have read where this is lean mixture. The only adjustment I have is the idle screw. The engine revs up fine, but still without a load.
I have gone back to standard ignition. Points set to .025, dwell reading is 29. I am going to try to get the dwell to the 31-34 recommended.
This is a total rebuild completed several months ago. New pistons, rings, bearing and valves ground. The engine sounds good, maybe a little more tappet noise than I would like, but don't want to mess with that until I get the engine running well. The carb I am using was rebuilt early last year and I have cleaned it well twice now.
I have done the vacuum leak test using Berryman B12 to spray around the intake and carb gaskets, but no leak detected.
Any help anyone could give would be appreciated. I really want to get this engine running well while on the hard.

Zack

Zack,
1300-1400 RPM is exactly at the transition between the high-speed system and the idle system. Whenever an engine will not continue running below that RPM, it is almost always a sure sign of a blockage within the idle jet or elsewhere within the idle passageway.

Zack,
It is not uncommon for a clear inline filter to appear less than full. It is not a good indicator of problems with a fuel supply.
Don
Don, thanks for you help. I found some blockage in the Idle passage. While it was apart, again, I cleaned the upper and lower idle ports. Now it purrs along at 800 rpm. I can get it lower but I think 800 rpms at idle is what you recommend.
Again, without all the valuable information on the site, your manual and your help, I would not have been able to solve the problem.
Thanks,
