The first time I removed the impeller shaft seals from my water pump I had a little difficulty. Actually, it was a major pain to remove the seals. The second time I used a tool that allowed me to pop the seals out in about 30 seconds.
The tool is a standard tip screw driver with 1/4 of an inch of the tip heated up and bent in a right angle.
Clamp the pump in a vise. Insert the tool (formerly known as screw driver) into the hole for the impeller shaft. Slip the tip of the screw driver between the rubber seal and the metal lip. Tap with a small hammer. Occassionally move the screwdriver across the circle to the opposide of the seal to keep it coming out evenly.
As an added bonus, because the screw driver is inside the seal, it won't scratch the pump body.
BTW: My wife refers to the cost of the second set of parts used in a job that ordinarily takes only one set as "tuition." As in, "You didn't mess up, you just payed Don $20 to learn how to do this job."
