I'm currently considering the purchase of a Newport 30 with Atomic 4 with two known "bad" cylinders. My current boat is a Macgregor 26X motorsailor with 50HP outboard, and I am totally new to inboard engines of any type.
Of course I had heard of the legendary A4 and all of the legend is not good. I priced out a diesel retrofit but based on my current financial situation it's literally a non-starter. Though the price of the boat is quite low, reflecting the condition of the motor among other things, I was thinking I probably ought to pass on the purchase when I stumbled onto this website.
Of course I realize everybody here is a fan, but still, I'm impressed by the overall tenor of the site and the great assistance given by Don and the rest of the forum members.
I'm a mechanical engineer by trade and have rebuilt a number of auto engines from a couple of Brit sportscars to Ford and Chevy V8s, so now I'm thinking the A4 should be a relative snap; a good winter garage project here in the frozen Nawth.
Thanks in advance for giving me the confidence to tackle this project. Assuming the survey of the boat otherwise goes well, I will be the proud owner of a Newport 30 and an A4 project before the end of the week.
