You must register (once) before you can log in and post your own messages.
You may use anything you like for a user name and password for the Community Forum. The Forum software keeps its own database of members, and it is the only one of our services that requires a user name and password.
Look for these words in the welcome message at the top of the Forum page:

Our email subscriber list is a completely different database, and it requires only your email address. The guest log (which we'll likely be phasing out) and the FAQ system don't require anything.
