I own A 1979 E 27 with an atomic four that shows every indication of out living the boat, if it does'nt rust to death. However the exhaust is really rotted. I'm sure this gets adressed all the time but I'm looking for someone who has perhaps replaced there old exhaust with a new waterlift muffler in the same or similar boat. Is this a project I can take on myself? Are there any particular makes of mufflers that the atomic four seems to prefer. Any and all information would be appreciated!

I have a '73 Ericson 27 that I've replaced the "hot" exhaust section twice on it. The piping from the engine to the vertical "riser" is just standard water pipes, available from a hardware store. The vertical "riser" is available from Pacific Seacraft, but not cheap. See

Exhaust Riser (http://www.pacificseacraft.com/parts/index.php?make=ericson&boatmodel=E27&boatdesc=Ericson+27&category=enginecomp&catdesc=Engine+System+Components)

You'll also need the insulation to wrap the exhaust piping from the engine to the riser and the riser. Pacific Seacraft also has this.

The worst part is working in the very confined space in the lazarette. My old body just barely can make it out after being down there for a while.

Good luck,

Ian,
I replaced exhaust pipe and muffler for my A4 in the Cal 2-27 more than 10 years ago and it still looks good [little corrosion because it's stainless steel].
I went to Seapower, Oakland, Ca. to place the order. They had someone mfg it.

I went there because they sell A4 parts and have some knowledgeable people. Today, I'd send a private message to Don Moyer to see if he can help before going to a parts store.

If I remember correctly I took the old parts to the store so they could match them.

The hardest part of the rebuild was getting the exhaust pipe flange off the manifold. Cost of the new parts was around $300-400 [?] then.

I replaced mine in my '75 27' O'day. I just took the whole mess to a local plumbing supply (inc. vertical) and they replaced it for about $60. Not hard except had to cut off old pipe at the engine. Used a $10 auto muffler thingie to join it. Had to redo with muffler cement - plumber had insisted I uses joint compound - big mistake - it smokes/burns. Hardest part was the rubber connection at the muffler itself ...the boat shop sold me a rubber exhaust hose (about $12)with a wire reinforcement - impossible to bend. A friend had the idea to remove the wire - the reinforcement is only for a long run of hose so it can't crimp. Good luck
