I am trying to tighten the forward friction plates by turning the reversing gear collar by (1) tooth as recommended. However, I can't loosen the screw that is driven between this collar's teeth. After reading some other threads, I am very concerned with putting too much muscle into it...I hear cracking the casting of the reversing gear can ruin a season!

--Any thoughts on how to safely loosen this screw without damaging the reversing gear?

--Is a slightly/occasionally slipping forward better than an engine that's out of commission?

It's frequently necessary to use a 1/2" socket, extension, and 3/8" ratchet to loosen the retaining pin. I may regret this statement, but we have no record of the pressure plate ever breaking while loosening the retaining pin.

Please read and heed all the caution notes relative to reinstalling the pin after you make your adjustment. There's no reason to make the pin as tight as yours seems to me.

Thanks Don,

I think I'll try in October as the season is almost over...just in case! I'll let you know if I cause any damage during loosening.
