I inherited a 1976 Pearson 30'. A wonderful boat, however, it has(d) been sitting for more than 5 years. The block of the atomic was cracked, and well about 1000 other problems arose. The biggest problem was the boat was located 250 miles downstream from where I live. I pulled the motor, drove (via car) back home, rebuilt the engine, had the block welded etc... I put the engine back in and it started right up and ran literally like a dream, better than i thought possible. On the first test run, we took a 360 starboard turn and then a 360 port just to make sure everything was working, about 170 into the port turn something happened, and the RPM of the motor dropped like something caught in the prop, an extra load on the engine. We drove back to the marina and in trying to dock lost reverse gear. I drove the boat 250 miles up stream through 5 locks with a half running atomic with no reverse (which is REALLY hard to dock I promise:)). Now the boat is home and I cant figure why it wont run like it did at first. The prop is clean. twice during the trip the ummm..'little arm' in the transmission came loose, so i put it back on and went on my way. friends seem to think its fuel delivery to the engine under load? The mechanical fuel pump i inherited didnt work so i attached an outboard gas tank with a squeeze bulb. I cant see why the engine would starve for gas..so Im convinced its in the transmission. I havent really done much to it since its been back, but i REALLY dont want to pull the block back out. I guess just any thoughts in general would be helpful. ....

Had a similar problem with rpm's last year on a rebuild...long story short, does the distributor turn to tune the engine? Ours didn't, does now with replacement, and problem with rpm's solved

When my A4 behaved that way it was a missing spark plug. The engine did not shake as I expected, I think because the flywheel is quite heavy for the size of the engine, unlike auto engines I have owned which shook when a spark plug missed.
