Hi Don,

We just ordered and installed one of the Mando 55amp alternators. We weren't having any luck getting any output from it until we hooked up the (optional) connection to the positive terminal of the coil. After that point we were reading around 13.5 - 13.7 volts at the battery.

So, on the one hand we're happy it's working, but also wondering why it might be that we needed the 12 volt connection. It was my impression from another post of yours that we wouldn't need the connection.

Thanks!

I'm not sure why the Mando wouldn't come on line without the external field flashing wire connected. The official factory position is that the alternator does have an internal field exciting wire, but that it may come on line a bit quicker (meaning at a lower RPM) if the external exciting circuit is provided.

I would leave the external exciting wire connected and press on.
