Hi...err, forgive me but I am pretty new at this and have absolutely no mechanical savvy, but I think I'm going to have to learn!! One of a few prob's is that my A4 stalls when I put it in reverse. I would leally appreciate any advice...along with pretty colored pictures would be even better!!

Thanks
Mark

Mark,

I'm not sure why your engine would stall in reverse but apparently not in forward. In any case, I would start with the simplest explanation which is that your idle RPM might be a bit lower than necessary, and/or the mixture is a bit lean.

To check the idle mixture, turn the screwdriver slotted valve on top of the carburetor (the one with the small coil spring under its head) slowly in and out to see if you can find a point where the idle RPM increases a small amount, or simply runs smoother.

Remember that in the case of the idle mixture you're controlling the air, so turning the valve in (clockwise) reduces the air and hence makes the mixture richer. It's difficult to predict whether your mixture might be too rich or too lean so it doesn't matter much which way you try first.

After setting the idle mixture, the idle RPM can be adjusted if necessary by finding the small idle stop screw on the center of the throttle lever assembly. Turning the set screw in (clockwise) will make the engine idle a bit faster.

Rare---but possible. Crab pots, old dock lines, barbed wire, coconuts (for those of us in the tropics) and other such nasties have the capability to attach themselves in a very scientific way to props, shafts, struts, etc. so that , of course, in neutral all is well----backs out of the slip---just fine----whilst in ahead---CLUNK! (Or visa-versa)
