I'm trying to reassemble a used A-4 I purchased that was partially dis-assembled.
I'm trying to assemble the bearing housing, the oil seal retainer and then the direct drive coupling. I just purchased the coupling from you guys with hopes it would fit on what I thought was my direct drive tailshaft.
My shaft is threaded and keyed but the coupling I had and the one I purchased from you will only slide on over the threaded part then my tailshaft steps up to being 1 1/8 for about 2 1/4 inches.
Is this the incorrect tailshaft for the direct drive transmission?
Could the be some sort of sleeve that was left pressed on my tailshaft?

You appear to be describing a 2 to 1 gear reduction tail shaft, in which case a direct drive output coupling is much too small. In fact, the diameter and length of the 2 to 1 gear reduction tail shaft are designed to accommodate the smaller of the two gears used in the reduction unit, and not an output coupling.

If you are reassembling the used engine to use in a boat with a direct drive engine, you could wait to assemble the reversing gear and aft housing of the used engine until such time as you would actually be removing the engine from your boat to exchange the engines, and then move the direct drive reversing gear assembly over to the used engine at that time.

But I don't have an existing A-4 in my boat I'm swapping out form a Volvo MB10a
I'll have to get a tailshaft for a direct drive.

Thanks
