2" exhaust hose

Finally found just the right exhaust hose. The MMI waterlift muffler uses a 2" exhaust port. I had finally decided the best solution was simply to replace the old 1.5" transom exhaust tip with a 2" model; could not figure a way to bush from the smaller tip to the larger hose. Vetus makes a nice stainless model with a built-in backsplash flap. We got one shipped in, but it was 3/32" too small for the ID of the only 2" hose we could find on hand in the local suppliers. The hose was not specifically spec'd for exhaust either. Ordered a length of Vetus 2" exhaust hose through Stright-MacKay, which perfectly fit both the exhaust tip and the MMI outlet port. Nice hose too: very light and easy to handle,half the weight of the tank truck oil pressure hose. Another job done.

I am slightly worried about reverse flow avoidance in my new exhaust system..the only thing I didn't replace was the plastic Vetus waterlift muffler.

There is no flap on the transom thru-hull (originally Catalina fitted a silly rubber flap..most fall off after a few years, so this was basically useless) and originally there was a bronze check valve in the highest point of the exhaust hose, (which was broken for years). I replaced this with a fiberglass Centrex elbow, after learning that apparently Catalina did away with these after a while also. It seems that a hefty breeze on stbd tack may allow water ingress if the transom is down and the elbow makes it below the waterline, which is on the port side of the boat just below the hull-deck joint.

Maybe I worry too much, but water into the engine twice has nearly killed it, I'd really like to avoid that if possible. :(

The flap is a plastic disc hinged slightly offset above its midpoint, so it swings shut. It can be removed by removing a single screw in the shiny cover which slips off, leaving the through-hull component intact. I like the idea of such an accessible check valve. We wonder how well the valve would survive a solid water slam from astern, but Vetus makes good stuff.

Thanks for the link. This link --> http://www.catalinadirect.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=18 is a piece I had purchased from Catalina Direct.

The problem with it was the OD of the fitting was much smaller than what came out of the transom, necessitating an additional weekend of fiberglass work in the middle of winter. I dunno what they mean by "easy retro-fit" in the advertising. I sent it back and replaced it with the same fitting that had been there for 30 years..a plastic thru-hull.

If I seem to have any problems with water, I may pick that up and install it next season.
