Does anyone know how to change the oil in the v-drive? I had a big problem this winter with water inside my boat and I am pretty sure water has entered the v-drive. (I'm not talking about the reverse gear transmission here). There is a dipstick with a very tiny hole - too small for my oilchange pump to get into. There are various other bolts/plates on the v-drive - but I don't know which are safe to remove. Also, what kind of oil to use?

I believe it's 90 weight gear oil that you can buy at an auto parts store in a bottle.
If memory serves there is a drain plug on the bottom of the V-drive, possibly with a square head? However, before I went messing with that I'd go to a plumbing supply store and find a thin copper tube and duct-tape it to the end of my oil change pump.

The drain plug is at the bottom facing the rear of the engine .a small 1/8 square head plug. If you look at the MMI catalog ,overhaul parts ...rev.Gear/drive train, scroll down to the V Drive, you can see it at the very bottom of the unit
My V-drive side plate reads ...use high grade SAE.20-30 motor oil OR APG 80
gear lubricant
I'd go with the 80 gear oil

...and where do you put the oil in?

There is a large square head plug on the very top of the v-drive .you'll need a small funnel to do the job and don't over fill it .Use your dip stick to check the oil level as you fill it, the drive doesn't take much oil

I know this is an older thread, but I've search the forum and haven't seen the discussions on gear oil like I have regarding engine oil.
I'm wondering what brand/type specific gear oil everyone prefers to use in their v-drive, or do you care?

The Walter RV-10D V-drive uses 1 pint of any of the following:
- SAE 30 Heavy Duty Motor Oil (same as the engine!)
- Exxon Spartan EP-68 Gear Oil
- APG-80 Gear Oil
DO NOT USE SAE 80 Motor oil or any multi-grade oil!
You can fill it or top it off thru the little dipstick tube. I bought a 1-pint squeeze bottle (used for icing cakes) that has a skinny, tapered nozzle and a little cap to seal it. Works perfect!
