You and I have the same hull I believe (my boat is a Bristol 29). An old
mechanic friend of mine told me a few years ago that he would replace
my double-walled exhaust pipe with a straight run of hose (after the
U shaped pipe to prevent water from running back into the engine).

Does the muffler serve a purpose other than make things quieter? The A4
runs pretty quietly as it is (one person at a gas dock once asked me if
it was running as I was about to leave after fueling).

I'd be interested to see what people have to say about needing a water
lift muffler--some day I may have to take on this job of replacement, too.

The water lift muffler will give you a little more cranking time (with the through hull open) before water backs up in the the #4 cylinder. Other than that & noise reduction I don't think there is really a need for a muffler.

I replaced the original muffler in my 1970 Morgan 33 with a VETUS water lift muffler about three years ago and it has performed perfectly. My installation was a feature article in BoatUS DIY boat owner magazine, issue #2, 2008.

The advantage of the VETUS unit is the adjustability of the housing, the inletand outlet including the body can be rotated to suit.

I have photos in addition to those published if you are interested.
