View Full Version : Ignition switch?

Yesterday I found that the electric fuel pump was clicking even when the engine was off. (Luckily, no fuel got through the carb. No smell, no apparent fuel anywhere.) Turning off the battery power at the main switch stopped it, so I assume the problem is in the switch, which I intend to replace today.
Can anyone tell me if there is any other possible cause? We were trying to start a cruise and I'd like to limit the time chasing this down so we can get going, safely.

Sounds like the switch. Others here are much better with electrical issues than I am. I would follow the lead from the pump back to the switch. Do you have a low oil pressure cut off? Could check continuity thru the switch before replacing.. I think the float valve should stop the flow of gas even if the pump keeps running. Have a good trip. Dan S/V Marian Claire

Dan
thanks for the reply. It Was the switch, and we were on our way in ten minutes. We are on anchor in lake Tashmoo on Marthas vineyard. Grandson very happy.
I'll install some kind of auto shutoff to deal with this when we get back.

The oil pressure safety switch is easy to install, if there is not one there now that is not working. Did the install this winter when I switched from mechanical to electric fuel pump. MMI sells one: http://www.moyermarine.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=FPMP_04_46.

My fuel pump is wired directly to the battery with a oil pressure switch - didn't see much of a reason to run it through the ignition switch. The fuse is accessible so is the wiring to disconnect it from the pressure switch.
