When putting tranny into forward I get a definite click into gear, the trouble is I have to back the throttle down to as low a rpm as possible to get it into gear without slipping. I also have a problem with the tranny slipping out of gear at 1900 rpm's or higher. Backing down on the throttle brings it back. Any ideas on corretive measures.

Try adjusting for FORWARD one more notch on the adjusting collar.

Check your linkage cable for full motion.
If you don't feel the forward "detente" that would be your problem.

I do feel the detente. When I get back to the boat next week I'm going to adjust the collar another notch. Thanks for you guys suggestions.

Julian, you say you feel the detent and I am assuming that you feel it both in & out?? The detent is very noticeable both ways and is not a STOP. Be sure as I have seen many times where the adjusting collar was to tight and felt like a stop AND just the linkage against the "cone" will hold her in gear to about 17~!1900 rpm's. It is deffinately best if you can to remove the "trans cover" and "SEE" the shifting pawl's up on to the detent. I have on many occasions helped to adjust because the detent is much more pronounced than expected, IE you have to almost force the A-4 into forward with the direct drive set up. I have seen many A-4's that were run for years without being fully engaged in forward, and to much throttle caused her to slip out of gear.
