Sudden Shutdown, Restarts but shuts down in gear

My c&c 29 w/atomic 4 shut down suddenly after about 1 hr of motoring. It would restart in neutral, but would shut down again when I put it in forward gear. It would not stall in reverse. If I only put the gear level down slightly it would go slowly enough to get us home in the rain. Any ideas what I should do first.

It sounds as though you may have gotten a bit of crud in your main jet. It would be good to know if your engine hesitates when advancing the throttle quickly while in neutral. If it does hesitate, it would confirm dirt in your main jet as the likely cause of your shutdown and low power.

It would also be help diagnostically if we knew whether or not if you can improve your performance at all by pulling on partial choke.
