I added a new project on the list. Installing a tac. How does one go about installing a tac? I have to admit, I don't have a clue. My boat has electronic ignition.
Thanks for the wisdom

Charles, you will need a place to mount it and probably a hole saw or patience and a file.
Be sure that the tach you choose is compatible with your ignition, most of them will be. Also try to get one that registers closer to your rpm range ie you don't need an 8,000 rpm tach and if you can find one limited to 4,000 rpm even better and easier to read "changes" in rpm.
The wiring directions will be in the Tachometer instructions, make sure you check for the correct number of cylinders connection/switch when installing.
The hardest part is mounting the wiring pretty much is just hook up and observe.

The tachometers most suitable for the A4 will be of the type that take signal from the negative terminal of the coil. Avoid alternator tachometers which in most cases must be corrected to engine rpm. Of course if you could score an original A4 mechanical tachometer, that would win the prize for real class!

Charles-
Since you have almost the same boat as mine, you might be able to do what I did...
I replaced the old depth gauge above the port lazarette with the 3-3/4” TACH GAUGE from MMI. It makes it very easy to read and see.
AND when I'm sailing and someone wants to sit there, no issue with trying to see my depth!
The old analog depth gauge (4") was toast long before and I had already gotten a Humminbird replacement and moved that to the steering ped.
But now I'm off topic again...
...anyway, something to consider before drilling, cutting etc.
The wiring, as the boyz have already stated, is very straightforward.
Although you may want to visit the "JUMPY TACH" thread at some point for some tidbits. (http://www.moyermarine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3662&highlight=jumpy+tach)
Sorry, I just had to post more pics to get under Shawn's skin! :p:D

Hi Charles,
A few months ago I had decided to do the same project and add a TAC to my A4. I purchased a Datcon Tac that reads up to 4000 rpm as needed with the A4 and as correctly suggested by our other members.
Last month I repowered with a diesel and have since sold the A4. I have the brand new Tac. PM me if you are interested. I can provide you with all the details.
Cheers.

I added EI and installed the nice tach MMI sells. Senses off the coil. Good RPM range. http://www.moyermarine.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=GAUG_08.1_322. In my boat it was easy to wire it up: one for the sensor from the coil, one for power from the ignition circuit, one to boat's ground, and one for the tach's internal light. Use good silvered marine wire and heatshrink the terminals. Label the wires. Put a little anticorrosive dielectric grease on the terminals. Add a switch to turn on/off the gauge's internal light, since it is not needed daytime. Consider circuit protection (fusing).
