Oberdorfer back plate gasket

The back plate gasket is quite thin and looks as if it could be made out of a paper bag. Can it be made from plain paper bags, or is the gasket that comes with an impeller made of special material?

Also, should you coat any back plate gasket with oil or petroleum jelly?

The gasket really is paper thin, and I don't see why you couldn't cut one from paper bag material. In terms of sealer or petroleum jelly, I like to use a thin application of the copper spray sealer that we used to use on the old copper clad head gaskets - back when they were still available.
