View Full Version : Dropping Out

One of our forum members sent us this report:

I am trying to discover why it is that I am constantly being dropped off line while I have in fact logged in. On more than one occasion I have completed a message to someone and when I get ready to send it have been informed that I am not logged in. This also results in the wiping out of all the work I was doing. Have I done something wrong?

Has anyone else bumped into this? Was there a solution?

Thanks for your help.

Bill

hi Bill, and welcome.
I also have that same problem, not just with this forum, but others as well. I think we get timed out, taking too long to assemble our thoughts, then typing slow (just a guess!).

My solution has been to highlight and copy my words, every time before clicking submit. That way, if I have to redo it, I just click 'paste' and presto, my pearls of wisdom are back and not lost to the universe.

Works for me, although, YMMV.

Thanks, Joe, for the timeout tip. (This is the time in seconds that a user must remain inactive before their login session expires. This setting also controls how long a user will remain on Who's Online after their last activity.)

It was set for 15 minutes, which is the default for our forum's software. I've increased it to a number which may be a bit more user-friendly.

HTH.

Bill

ps: Enjoyed the blog. Fun reading.

I have noticed that if I try to page back to double check the message I was replying to
I will lose the text window I was typing in.

That used to happen to me, so I too "kept" my writing somewhere like notepad or MS Word so I would not lose it. I often surf around the web getting info in the middle of a post. I musta' got timed out. This makes sense now. Thanks for the extension.

I think Joe nailed it..I definitely have taken longer than 15 minutes to assemble my thoughts - if you can even call my incessant babbling 'thoughts'! :D

I also use his same trick...Ctrl "A"(select all) + Ctrl "C"(copy to clipboard) is a lifesaver...especially on long detailed posts.

Incidentally, I haven't personally had the log out problem..I set up all of my computers to automagically log me in to the Moyer Forum anyway, so I never really leave...I am sure I have at least one PC logged into this forum at all times

I too have had the problem and this sheds some light on it:rolleyes:.

I have also lost my log on privilages due to an inadvertant shutdown of the computer while logged on, twice:eek:.

Thanx for the info and the extension:), Dave Neptune:cool:

Thanks for the moral support. If I'm going to get kicked out, I like it to be in distinguished company.

When I compose posts I tend to hit "preview" which probably keeps me out of the timeout cycle. Never had that problem, and I get the post closer to right before I hit "submit".

It sometimes happens to me - you snooze you lose in this dang computer world!
