A "Recent Threads" section resides at the very top of the forum's home page, providing a convenient means of scanning new threads and posts before they fall into the categories below.

A few months ago, I upped the size of this section from 10 to 15 items, because it seemed to me that there was so much new traffic that items fell off the bottom too quickly. Now, I'm thinking that even 15 is too few.

What are your thoughts, guys?

Bill

Are we missing any at 15?

Rather than a number, perhaps a time cutoff. Perhaps all posts having a response within the last week?

Nothing really ever goes missing. It's as if the "Recent Threads" section is an inbox limited to copies of the latest 15 items. Once item 16 comes in, item 1 goes off, although it will always be present in the appropriate category shown below the "Recent Threads" section.

I kinda like Al's idea with the time-frame cutoff.
Although I guess you have to work within the software parameters you're given...

Bill, Now that you've explained it, 15 is definitely better than 10. I'd go cruising for the weekend (I know, that was a long time ago until recently) and I'd lose some, but now I have to check the forum every 24 hours to keep up...maybe 20 or 25?

I have gotten used to checking deeper if I notice that the 'recent threads' area is full of bold, unread msgs!

The more traffic and A4 enthusiasts the merrier I say!!!!

Maybe everyone knows about this "trick" but it took me years to discover it.

After clicking on New Posts then you click on the little check type icon next to
a thread -- you will be jumped down to where the new entries start.

I think 20 items would be the least number needed. I have sometimes
posted a item and had it prempted off the list in less than a hour.

What is the story with the check besides the entries. Could you explain
it's usage.

Lastly, I find that it is necessary to leave the forum and re enter it to
have it update .

Thanks

Art-
What "jhwelch" means is this...

On entering the COMMUNITY FORUM page, look for the NEW POSTS header.
(or use the link right under your screen name)

On the NEW POSTS page you'll see the "Check Marks" next to the Thread Names.
Click on the check mark and you'll be jumped to the latest posts instead of having to scroll from the top, original post.
(or move thru multiple pages if you're looking at Shawn's "INDIGO" novel... :p)

For me that's the same as "missing", because I tend not to search for new additional new threads in the specific categories.

Jerry, good tip. New one on me!

Not directly related to recent threads but rather Admin controls, how often does the "Who's Online" feature refresh? I go there often to see what everybody's up to and lately it seems stuck, like members are staying on a particular thread for an unusually long time, different than a month ago.

I'm sure they're not that slow.:D

For instance, Bill - it currently shows you've been viewing the "Hot thru-hull" thread for the past hour - and there's only 4 posts!!

Neil,

it is entirely possible that I may be logged in and on one thread for days! I am a slow reader... :D

Neil:

Remember this?

Thanks, Joe, for the timeout tip. (This is the time in seconds that a user must remain inactive before their login session expires. This setting also controls how long a user will remain on Who's Online after their last activity.)

I think that explains this:

Bill I noticed something just now I have never seen before.

If I just open the forum without logging in, I do not get many of days posts,
including the Earl postings. If I then login, I do get them.

I further have noticed that the posts do not get updated unless I
go back to the home page and then reopen the forum ( seen this before)

FYI

Thanks

By design, the "Off-Topic" category (which includes the Earl postings) is visible only to validated forum members who are logged in.

Are all the threads saved? If so, any subject can be found.

Everything is there. You just need the appropriate access rights (validated and logged in) to view them.
