My cooling system is working fine. I have never serviced the water pump or changed the impeller. It is at least five years old and I am growing uncomfortable with its age. I should at least have a spare on board. The problem is that I don't know what pump I have. Naturally, it is in a diffucult location and I have never actually had much of a look at it. How can I tell what it is so I can order the correct parts? I'm looking for the quickest way in a poor visability situation. I will most certainly be in pain while I am looking.

Don can certainly tell you what pump you have----My post is tout the benefits of the "new" cover with the captive thumb screws----a great idea---and works well.

I like the idea of the new pump; especially the easily removed cover. I am concerned about the access to make the change and I do want the boat to be operational for the rest of the season.

I think the idea of carrying a spare water pump on a cruising sail boat is a very good idea. My usual recommendation is to remove the old (presumably still working) pump to serve as a spare and going directly to the new one on the engine.
All of the commonly used brands of pumps (including our MMI flange pump) are completely interchangeable, so it doesn't really matter which brand is currently in use on your engine.
