Hey,

I am slowly making my way through my rebuild and am continuing to tackle rusted parts, etc...

I have been using a drill and wire disk on some of these parts as well as navel jelly when needed.

There was some gunk on the inside of oil pan so I wire brushed it. Can I assume that when this all goes back together that I just leave the inside of the oil pan bare metal ? My guess is that is preferable to attempting to put a finish in there as it could end up coming loose.

Thanks

This is a very interesting question. Until the A4 I had not worked on an engine with a finished oil pan interior. But mostly I worked on steel pans. The Kohler engines I work on have cast iron pans too, but are unfinished inside. My first reaction would be to go with bare metal unless you can be certain the finish you apply would not come loose. Unless you plan on a salt water flush, I think the oil environment under the engine will provide sufficient protection.
