Don, thanks for your reply about the diverter cap in an early model engine.

Do I need a siphon break in the hose that runs from the end of the mainfold to the entry of the copper jacketed water exhaust? I know this is not normal, but I just want the minimal installation required to get the engine running.

The previous owner removed the thermostat (early model engine) and had a gate valve that diverted hot water to the upstream side of the engine. I've removed all that in anticipation of installing fresh water cooling. But I'm wary of changing too many things at once. I'd like to set the engine up to run "cold" I.E. have the water run straight though until I'm sure the engine is running OK. Then I'll add the other aftermarket stuff.

So, should I get siphon break in the loop or am I OK run it "cold" (for testing purposes only, no load on the engine) with out one?

Thanks

Lance,

An anti-siphon valve is not necessary in a double-walled (copper jacketed) system, and there should be no negative consequences to running your engine as you're planning.
