Hello All,
I just replaced the hoy section of my exhaust system and there seems to be some type of "burn off" coming from the replaced pipes. This is the first time I've done this so I'm not sure if I used the proper pipe compound or if I should have used any at all. I used "pro dope" pipe compound and dope tape to ensure a tight seal between the pipes. Now I am getting a gray smoke coming from the pipes near the threads. It doesn't smell like exhaust. It has a steel like or putty like odor which is why I think it is the pipe dope. Should I just continue to let it "burn" or should I disassemble and use something else?

It's probably the cutting oil left from the pipe threading operation. I would run it more to see if it burns off, but if you used water pipe putty, it might stink for quite a while.
you may have to use proper high-temp sealer like furnace cement.

I agree. Even with black iron you will notice smoke the first few times you run her hard then it should be gone. Keep her well ventilated first couple of runs out.

Brian..no problem...you'll need to vent the cabin for a while yet when the engine is running. I did galvanized (not recommended) a couple years back and it off-gassed for about 20 hours. Hopefully, yours will be less.
