How to remove water pump shaft?

How to remove water pump shaft? The shaft pulled part way out, then hit a definite stopping point. I didn't want to force it, so I replaced the impeller and pushed the shaft back into position. Is it necessary to pull it out with some force?

There is really nothing holding the shaft in your water pump other than perhaps some rather deep scouring which sometimes causes the shaft and housing to stick together. If the pump is back together and working, I think I'd leave well enough alone.
