I got the vidio on the reversing gear, saw it 7 times, slept through 3 times, but unable to solve problems that look so simple on tape. This is what my reversing gear looks like. The plates inside the gear fell off the gear to the rear. The adjusting collar and plate are loose and fell to the rear. the handle is stuck in forward position. I tried putting the plates into the big round cylinder, one at a time, lifting each plate with a small nose pliers. I did that for several hours but as one plate gets into the groove of the cylinder, it seem to slide off and go down into hell. I had all plates on at one time and when I put the Plate and adjustable collar into place, they fell off. I thought it may be the oil in the engine. So I pumped it out. Still no luck. Now I am trying to go through the back. I tried turning the nut on the back of the tranny, the one that has a lock washer, but it seems the lock washer has (locked) washed into place when I was forcing it before I knew about it. I am ready to cut the nut off with my dremil tool but I got rained out today and would like some advise. If I can take everything out from the rear, see what the parts are like, is that a good idea? Help.... I wanna go sailing.

I remember your original post a couple of weeks or so ago. At that time it just sounded like your adjusting collar was too loose. Now it sounds more significant but I can't tell what's going on from your description. I'm sure somebody here can help. Can you post a photo of the innards of your reversing gear (cover plate off)?

Better than a photo, I'm going to (try) to attach a image of a drawing of the guts of the transmission. Hope it helps. The only thing I can see that would be giving you major problems is if the ball bearing (#95) has fallen off the end of the output shaft. And the only way for that to happen would have been for you to have the two plates off the output end of the transmission.

Here is a pdf of the Universal parts catalogue. It is larger, so save it to your computer (it will come in handy)!

The guts of the reversing gear are on page 59, parts descriptions follow.
