Background:
Original Atomic 4 mounted in a 1974 C&C 35 MKII sailed on Narragansett Bay and Long Island Sound. Last winter we replaced the water jacket side plate after water erosion cut a hole through the plate just aft of the 'T' fitting. Since the hole very nicely directed water into the alternator cooling vanes the engine was completely saturated with salt water. The engine was stripped of most of its components over the winter, cleaned and repainted were necessary. One the items removed and repainted was the top alternator bracket.
Currently:
We just finished winterizing the engine and upon pulling the N0. 3 spark plug found that it had sat in saltwater most of the season; i.e. lots of rust and crystallized salt in the spark plug mounting depression on the engine top. The water appears to be coming from the aft alternator mounting stud just forward and slightly to the side of no. 3 spark plug. The stud appears to be fully seated since its top end is flush with the nut that holds the alternator bracket down on the engine top. Have you encountered this problem and how would recommend it be dealt with?
