The 1 1/4 exhaust from the manifold to the h20 muffler recently rusted thru on my Islander MK 30. I rebuilt it out of flexable replacement muffler with pipe clamps at both ends.
My worry is the heat, and how to seal the exhaust leak at the muffler. Is there a heat tape style barrier to keep the heat away from the hull wall and the electrical nearby? Also, the original pipe had a 90 degree elbow, my replacement is a long bend or sweep elbow. Will water run back into the engine?
Thanx.....SR

Stefan,

Without a photograph of your exhaust system, it would be very difficult for any of us to determine how safely it will prevent water from running back into the manifold. In general, it is not the type of elbows used, but how much vertical space there is between the top of the hot section (between the manifold and the water lift muffler) and the point where the engine cooling water is introduced.

McMaster-Carr lists a thermal wrap with incredible heat resistance (2300 degrees), and it comes in 2" wide by 25 feet long strips. This wrap has a part number of 87575K88 and costs $24. They also list an adhesive backed version of this wrap for $43 (part number: 4057K6), and it still has a heat resistance of 1500 degrees.

McMaster-Carr's phone number is: (732) 329-3200.
