Hi, I was wondering if anyone has ever used electric Raw water pump instead of the belt driven pump for FWC engines? What are the drawbacks of putting a 3-5GPM sureflow for raw water wired to the ignition?

P.S. Don, its great to have an atomic 4 forum.

Hi,
We have heard of a few cases where someone installed an electric pump to
function as a sea water pump in a fresh water cooling system but we have no
evidence that there are many benefits over a belt-driven pump. I have no
particular opinion or experience other than that they tend to be a bit more
complicated than you would think. Perhaps someone in our Forum will have
some hands-on experience and advice.
I am quite sure that you would not want to simply connect an electric water
pump between the ignition switch and coil. You would have to connect the
coil of a relay between the ignition switch and the ignition coil and then
run the power leg directly from the battery buss to the water pump.
Otherwise, you would be at risk of introducing too much voltage drop in the
lead to the coil. We get away with running an electric fuel pump off the
coil lead, but they only draw an amp or so, while electric water pumps draw
considerably more.
You would also need to be sure that the pump is designed for continuous duty
so that it will not fail prematurely.
