The Atomic 4 family mourns the loss of Urban F. Shick, who passed away Sunday, October 17th. "Qshicks", as he was affectionately known, was a frequent contributor to the SailNet Atomic 4 discussion group, where his experience, insights and recommendations on virtually every aspect of Atomic 4 operation and maintenance were treasured.

NEW LONDON - Urban F. Shick, 66, of 366 ½ Jefferson Ave., New London, died Sunday, October 17, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born July 6, 1938 in Philadelphia, PA the son of William H. and Catherine Quirk Shick.

He was married to Mary Ann Bowen Shick at Langley Air Force Base, Langley, VA on April 21, 1968.

Mr. Shick served in the US Navy for 22 years from 1957 until retirement in 1979. He is a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Following his military service he ran a small boat mechanical system repair shop in Noank until 1997. In recent years he enjoyed linking up with old engine mechanics, observing birds and wildlife around his home, and he most especially loved playing with his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Mary Ann, he is survived by his sons; Jeffrey Shick of Groton and William Shick and his wife Andrea of Groton, and his 2 grandchildren; Adam Christopher Shick and Christine Rae Shick.

A graveside funeral service will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, at Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic. Calling hours will be held at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London on Wednesday from 4 – 7 PM. Donations in his memory may be made to Mystic Seaport Small Boat Shop, PO Box 6000, 75 Greenmanville Ave., Mystic, CT 06355 or to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Neo-Natal ICU, 365 Montauk Ave., New London, CT 06320.

That is very sad news. Even though I am not currently a member, I subscribed to the Sailnet A4 list for many years and QShicks was always a member who could be counted on for thoughtful, useful advice and troubleshooting. I learned much from the man.

Thank you Qshicks for all the years of assistance you provided to thousands of Atomic Four owners. Years before the Sailnet A4 discussion forum began, Qshicks was offering advice and assistance to sailboat owners in the AOL Atomic Four bulletin board. I learned a lot from Qshicks and will always be in his debt. Largely thanks to the education he provided, my original 29 year old A4 is still running great. And I'm sure it is not the only one.

Thank you Qshicks! You are missed.
