Hi- My 1971 Ericson 29 has the stock standpipe exhaust system. It constantly plugs with salt/ corrosion. I would like to replace it with a water-lift muffler, but have been told that the E-29 A-4 location won't allow this. If any of you have successfully done the waterlift muffler installation, I would sure like to learn the specifics. Thanks, Ray Hughes. (RAYJAY3@sbcglobal.net)

I installed a water lift system on my '73 E-27 this Summer. By far the best thing I've ever done for the boat. A-4 runs really smooth and quiet now.

If the the configuration is the same on your boat, I mounted the muffler directly aft of the rear fire wall of the engine compartment, just forward the fuel tank. That's about the only point lower than the engine on the E-27. I spent an afternoon leaning upside down through the cockpit hatch to put it in place.

The 'wet elbow' off the exhaust manifold sits as high as the engine cover will allow. This is only a few inches above the waterline, so I had to install a vented loop on the water hose.

Another good choice to find exhaust wrap or other hard to find materials is McMaster-Carr. For exhaust wrap search their site or look at catalog pages 3259 to 3262.

In general prices are OK (prices on rope are much better than the boat store, though)--and it can be shipped right to your door.

Autobarn sells a white exhaust wrap that I am going to try. I tried a fiberglass incombustible insulation and is turned brown and smelled bad .
