My A4 is now in pieces on my friendly neighborhood mechanics bench. I now have a list of parts to get.

One of them is a bushing for the gear on the shaft that drives the water pump, distributor, etc. I THINK that is what the catalogue refers to as the idler gear bushing or bearing. Is that right?

The bushing was completely worn out - it was just a thin brass circle. The funny thing is that neither the gear nor the shaft were worn at all.

Any idea what would cause this?

Larry,

That is indeed the idler gear and spindle. You can see the bushing, spindle, and gear/spindle combinations in our online catalog. They have part numbers of: OBLK_11_216 for the idler gear and shaft - rebushed and remachined (used), OBLK_12_244 for the idler gear bushing and, OBLK_13_217 for the idler gear shaft (new).
