1980 catalina '30. I have had various issues in the past with fuel delivery but thought they were all worked out. I have a new electric pump this year, clean filter.

Last night i when you go for a sunset cruise, started the 'ol A4 and let her warm up for 20min or so as i prepared for launch - sounded great with fine water flow out the back. Lady friend at the wheel as we cast off.

30seconds after pulling away from the dock the engine says "sputter, sputter die!"

I say "oh darn" (not eactly the same word choice), "we are in a crowded marina with a good current!"

After taking over the helm i pulled the choke, turned the key, and gave it some throttle. Very shaky start and operation - for about 17 seconds - then dead again. Would only run with full choke and moderate throttle.

Two more of these and a numble crew and we got back on the dock without hurting any of the (much nicer) boats around me.

Here's what i've done: Check for water in seperator - fine, jumpered hot side of coil to to pump - seems OK, check full delivery to pump - seems OK. I then decided it was much too nice an evening to be armpits deep in the engine so got a beer and enjoyed the sunset anyway.

I will be back there for more diagnostics soon but figured i may be able to get some specific points from here.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure where you bought your fuel pump but I hope you asked for a 4 psi pump and not the usual Atomic 4 pump, which is a nominal 3 psi pump. Although, having said that, your symptoms (will only run with full choke) are much more consistent with a partial restriction in the main jet of the carburetor.

I had a similar problem and it was a leaky carb gasket. Running only when choked means there's either a leak somewhere or a fuel restriction.

The Carb is where i was going next - thanks for the input.

Oh, and i purchased the pump through the place that knows their stuff best - Moyer marine.
