I have redone some of my wiring and their connections, and have learned a lot along the way. I have a few questions to ask of the Afourian community. I am sorry that I do not have a way to do a diagram and attach it.

Most of my wiring is set up as shown in the MM General Distribution of Engine DC Powers with a couple other goodies like an oil pressure/temp alarm. I have 2 group 27 batteries going to an Off-1-Both-2 switch, and the original 35A Motorola alternator. Note that my alternator output to solenoid connection is direct and #8 red. (Or is it solenoid to alternator?)

The PO had one wire running from the the alternator output to the ignition switch BATT terminal. I have no ammeter. Is this right? What gauge should it be? Should it be fused?

The PO had a wire from alternator output to the power bus. Is this OK? How best to run power to the power bus? What gauge should it be? Should it be fused?

Should the cables coming from the batteries be fused and what size?

I would appreciate learning what others think about these queries.

I have a 1970 vintage A4 and the only gauge I have is a Ammeter. I'd like to add a temp and oil pressure gauge but not sure where they attach at the motor. I assume the oil goes behind the flywheel on the carb side (The PO has a gauge stuck there to monitor) but not sure where the temp sender attaches.
I see there are many sender/gauge units sold by Moyers and am familiar with installing them but I'll be dogged if I can figure out where the temp sender goes.
If you have any info or idea of an existing thread that shows it I'd sure be appreciative.
Happy sailing...

The one problem has been an excess of blow-by gasses coming from the oil fill. To combat this, I installed a PCV system, which reduced but did not eliminate the problem. The motor has new rings and valve guides, installed during the overhaul, so I don't understand why I have this problem.

I guess I did something wrong or missed something important during the overhaul, but I can't think what it could be. Help me Afourians!

What can you say are advantages/disadvantages of running the engine this way?

The engine ended up having no compression and we did not buy it. We then bought a late model engine that I am currently rebuilding to replace the late model in our boat. So I have no use for the starter I purchased. It has about one minute of total cranking time on the starter and is in the same nice shape I purchased it from Moyer. I am asking $250 including ground shipping to the lower 48 states.

The next upgrade wish on my A-4 has been FWC, but I've got a couple of reservations, along with a couple of questions. First, my engine has this persistent habit of shutting down after running for about an hour. So far as I can tell, once the engine gets warm enough, some sort of vapor lock sets in. I've swapped out coil after coil, and have no reason to believe that's the cause. In any case, I suspect that if I install FWC, this shutdown habit will only be enhanced, as it will likely run 20 or so degrees warmer down here in on the warm waters of the Gulf coast.

To mitigate the effects of RWC, I've taken up the Dave Neptune approach and have been running a few gallons of fresh water (via a drywall bucket) through the engine after each sail.

So there are two matters that I'd like to hear ya'lls opinions. First, would FWC likely accentuate the shutdown phenomenon? Second, what do you all think of Dave Neptune's approach to FWC?

Thanks to all!

First prob: I can rev the motor with no problem when not in gear. When I put it in forward gear It will not rev no matter how much I throttle up.

Second Prob: It is a hard start when cold. It will not start until it gets warmed bye me trying to start it. (don't want to burn out my starter)

Unfortunately I do not have a tach, but plan on installing one today after work. I was told bye a mechanic friend of mine that I could have a choke issue. I will be grateful for any other advice.

I have a packaged pump I need to sell for my club and thought I'd toss it out here due to the vast crossection of our members regarding boating.

What I have is a "USGS dewatering pump" like they drop out of the helo's to vessells taking on water. I think it is a PB1 and it is still in the original "boxes with the pump mounted" in one and the hoses in the other. I also have 2 extra baffled rigid intakes and one roll-up discharge. I believe it is a 3HP pump. The unit is artound 6~8 years old and was a demo, it has about 5 hours of run time on it and is very clean.

Good for dewatering or even fighting fires using your swimming pool. I actually have two friends who live in wooded canyons that keep them in there garage :o just incase.

Any interest just PM me. I will try to get some pics as well.

So spring commissioning has been quite the fun process. I installed electronic ignition, did my Acid flush, and even correctly timed the engine.. (Wow, what a difference that makes!).

During the first good run of the Atomic 4 (1974 Catalina 27tr), we were motoring into so good waves (5ft or so), on the way to harbor.

The ride up the river the engine stayed around 180 degrees, which has always been pretty normal, but once we hit the waves and I had to give it some more power, I noticed that my temp went up. Alot.

Thankfully I installed the MM Temperature warning kit, and was able to clamp off the bypass to cool the engine down.

Realizing that I had sufficient water flowing through then engine made me think that the issue must lie with the Termostat. So I pulled off the dome, and pulled the thermostat. It looks like it's missing some pieces.

Can anyone familiar with themostats take a look at the pictures and give me your feedback? I put it into a pan of boiling water; but it didnt seem to do anything whatsoever...

Thanks everyone. Im pretty sure I'll have to get the new thermostat, and will have to dig around the forums to determine what to get .

Finally got KTS wet this weekend. The A-4 roared to life quickly. Spring commissioning included bottom paint and a new cutlas bearing. She purrs along both quick and quiet....but too fast:D? At 29ft and only 7500 lbs , I think I'm at the smaller end of the A-4 scale. I find myself having to shift into neutral frequently as I navigate within the marina. At the current idle setting I'm steaming around too fast for several of the sharp turns and tight corners , not to mention its a pretty busy area with many others darting in and around.
I wanted to tackle this last year, but before I could I was hood- winked by an intermintant stalling issue . I needed to solve that so I could be certain that when I started mucking about with a carb for the very first time, I could clearly determine the effects of my actions.......finally here's the question....Do I simply adjust the idle setting, or play with the fuel mixture also?
Thanks
